Vaccinations

Kansas City Veterinary Care recommends that all dogs be vaccinated against rabies and what is commonly referred to as DAPP (Distemper, Adenovirus, Parainfluenza and Parvovirus). For many dogs, both rabies and DAPP vaccines can protect for up to three years, depending on the exposure risks.

This is particularly important if the dog is ever boarded or put into a pet daycare. Many kennel and daycare facilities will not accept dogs that have not had a Bordetella vaccination. Even dogs that spend just a few hours in a kennel during grooming every few months should be vaccinated against Bordetella, as well as dogs that are in training classes or go to dog parks or other places where other dogs are present.

Kansas City Veterinary Care recently started to recommend dogs be vaccinated against Leptospirosis, a zoonotic disease contagious to people that is relatively new to the Kansas City area.

Kansas City Veterinary Care recommends that cats be vaccinated against Rabies, Feline Panleukopenia, Feline Herpesvirus, Feline Calicivirus and Feline Leukemia. While many of these vaccinations, in certain circumstances, can protect for up to three years, we still recommend that boarded cats receive an upper respiratory vaccination and cats that go outdoors be vaccinated against Feline Leukemia every year.
